DOLL #5 - “My Gem”

ABG 1362 “My Gem” – Alt, Beck & Gottschalk, Germany (c. 1900)

This charming 17-inch bisque head doll was produced by Alt, Beck & Gottschalk of Germany and is marked ABG 1362, a model commonly known as “My Gem.” She features large brown sleep eyes, delicately painted brows and lashes, an open mouth with visible teeth, and a brunette wig beneath her original sage-green and mauve bonnet. Her period costume includes a sage-green dress and matching jacket with pink trim, lace accents, undergarments including a chemise, knit stockings, and soft cream-colored shoes. The previous owner referred to this doll as “Sweet Nell,” though that designation properly belongs to ABG model 1361 rather than the present 1362 model.

Condition is excellent overall. The bisque head displays beautifully with bright original coloring and no observed cracks, chips, or repairs. The composition body retains its finish well, with only minor age-related wear visible to the hands and extremities. The costume appears original or period-appropriate and remains in very good condition, with attractive preservation of the fabrics, lacework, bonnet, stockings, and shoes. Family records indicate the doll was purchased on eBay in 2019 for $395.
